Wilson Not Expected To Need Surgery After Back Injury At Mid-Ohio

Last updated on Tuesday, August 9, 2011

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Izod IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson is not expected to need surgery after suffering a compression fracture in his back during practice for last weekend’s race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Neither Wilson nor Dreyer and Reinbold Racing has commented officially on the injury, but Wilson did tweet over the weekend that he is not anticipating surgery and that he will wear a back brace for an extended period of time.

Wilson was practicing before time trials on Saturday when the car left the track and he drove through a run-off area.

The car went through the grass and hit the asphalt edge of an access road, bouncing Wilson hard several times in the cockpit.

Wilson was flown to Indianapolis on Sunday for further examination.

A compression fracture takes eight to ten weeks to heal, longer if surgery is required.

Simon Pagenaud qualified and raced Wilson's number-22 car in the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio, finishing 13th.
