(WEST LAFAYETTE, IN) - Purdue athletic department officials say quarterback Robert Marve remains eligible despite a report that he received improper benefits while playing at the University of Miami.
Marve transferred from Miami in 2009 after losing the starting job to Jacory Harris. Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro claims he provided impermissible benefits to at least 72 athletes between 2002 and 2010.
Shapiro, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence in federal prison for his involvement in a ponzi scheme, told Yahoo Sports that Marve was one of those to receive benefits.
An expert on NCAA compliance says Purdue runs a risk if they play Marve and it turns out that he was involved.
Robert Mathner, an assistant professor at Troy University and former compliance director at three NCAA universities, tells the Lafayette Journal and Courier that Purdue could have to forfeit games in which Marve played should Marve be found to have been involved in the improprieties at Miami.
Marve played in four games last season before suffering a torn ACL in his left knee. He has been limited in practice this fall by swelling in the right knee.
