(SPEEDWAY, IN) - Paul Menard became another underdog to win a major Sprint Cup race this season after he resisted a bulldog effort by Jeff Gordon to win at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Menard beat the four time Brickyard champ by less than a second yesterday for his first win of the season and first win of his Sprint Cup career.
Menard and his team gambled late in the race by deciding against making a pit stop, even though Gordon and the other front runners elected to do so.
After crossing the yard of bricks first, Menard was later joined by his father in victory lane.
John Menard fielded several cars in the Indianapolis 500 as a team owner, and often suffered heartbreak at the two and a half mile oval.
Regan Smith came in third, followed by Jamie McMurray and Matt Kenseth.
Tony Stewart fought off an early stop and start penalty to finish sixth.
Ryan Newman had a respectable showing in his home state and finished twelfth.
All three Indiana drivers would participate in the Chase for the Championship if it started today.
Gordon is seventh in points, Newman is eighth, and Stewart jumped two spots to ninth.
