Cardinals Avoid Sweep With Win Over Brewers

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The St. Louis Cardinals avoided being swept at home by Milwaukee, defeating the Brewers 5-2.

Milwaukee jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double by Mark Kotsay and a run-scoring single from Prince Fielder.

The Redbirds tied it in the bottom of the first on solo home runs by Rafael Furcal and Albert Pujols.

Lance Berkman put St. Louis up to stay with an RBI single in the third.

Pujols made it 4-2 Cardinals with an RBI single in the fifth and would come around to score the final run on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Chris Carpenter went eight innings to pick up the win, evening his record at 8-8.

The Brewers have their six-game winning streak halted and their lead over the cardinals in the NL Central is down to four games.
