Indy Native Contributes To U.S. Soccer Victory Over North Korea

(DRESDEN, GERMANY) - Indianapolis native Lauren Cheney scored one of the goals as the United States defeated North Korea 2-0 in their opening game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup soccer tournament in Germany.

Cheney took a cross from veteran forward Abby Wambach in the 54th minute and headed it North Korean goalkeeper Hong Myong Hui to give the USA a 1-0 lead. Rachel Buehler scored in the 76th minute to give the Americans their final goal.

With the win, the United States takes the lead in group-C over Sweden based on goal differential. The Swedes won their opener over Columbia 1-0.

The Americans take on Columbia on Sunday before wrapping up group play on July 6th against Sweden.
