Cardinals Move Into Tie For First After Blowing Away Phillies

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - Chris Carpenter picked up his second win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals avoided a three-game series sweep against Philadelphia, pounding the Phillies 12-2.

Carpenter allowed a run on five hits over seven innings to collect his first win since May 10th and improve to 2-7.

Lance Berkman hit a three-run home run while Jon Jay added a solo shot and drove in two.

Phillies starter Roy Oswalt took the loss, allowing four runs before leaving at the end of the second inning with tightness in his lower back.

With the win, the Cardinals move back into a tie with Milwaukee atop the NL Central.
