First Indiana Mister Basketball Award Winner Passes Away

(RANCHO CODOVA, CA) - Indiana’s first Mister Basketball has died.

George Crowe was 89 when he passed away Tuesday in California.

Crowe attended Franklin High School and received the first Indiana Mister Basketball award in 1939.

He played baseball and basketball collegiately at Indiana Central College, now the University of Indianapolis.

After serving in the Army during World War II, Crowe played professional baseball, starting out with the New York Black Yankees of the Negro National League.

He reached the major leagues with the Boston Braves in 1952.

Crowe played first base for the Braves, the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis cardinals, making the National League All-Star Team in 1958.
