Last updated on Tuesday, September 14, 2010

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The St. Louis Cardinals trail Cincinnati by seven games in the NL Central after falling at home to the Chicago Cubs 5-1.

Former Notre Dame football player Jeff Samardzija, in a spot start because Carlos Silva is sidelined by an elbow injury, fired five and two-thirds innings of shutout baseball and drove in a run with an RBI single.

Alfonso Soriano had a two-run single with Giovany Soto and Kosuke Fukudome adding run-scoring base hits.

Matt Holliday drove in the lone St. Louis run with an RBI single in the seventh as the Cardinals have lost five of their last seven.

The Reds' magic number for clinching the central is down to 13.
