Last updated on Tuesday, September 28, 2010

(OAKLAND, CA) - Former Indiana University basketball player Keith Smart is the new head coach of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

Smart replaces Don Nelson, who had the final year of his contract bought out.

Smart has spent seven years as an assistant for the Warriors.

He was originally drafted by Golden State in 1988 and played briefly in the NBA for the San Antonio Spurs.

Smart's claim to fame as a player is hitting the shot with four seconds remaining that gave the Hoosiers the NCAA Championship over Syracuse in 1987.
