Carpenter's Strong Performance Helps Cards Pull Even With Reds

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - The St. Louis Cardinals pulled back into a first-place tie with Cincinnati atop the NL Central standings with a 4-1 win over the Reds.

Chris Carpenter allowed a run on four hits over eight innings to improve to 7-1 on the season.

Brendon Ryan opened the scoring with an RBI triple off Reds starter Sam Lecure in the fourth.

St. Louis scored twice more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Skip Schumaker and a broken-bat RBI single from Ryan Ludwick.

Cincinnati scored its run in the seventh on a Scott Rolen single before Matt Holliday added an insurance run with his seventh home run of the year.

The Cardinals took two of three in the series.
