Reds Avoid Sweep On Gomes' Walk Off Home Run

Last updated on Friday, April 9, 2010

(CINCINNATI, OH) - Jonny Gomes’ solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth gave the Cincinnati Reds their first win of the season as they beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1.

Reds starter Bronson Arroyo and St. Louis' Brad Penny hooked up in a pitchers' duel with Arroyo breaking the ice himself with an RBI single in the fifth.

Matt Holliday tagged Arroyo with a game-tying solo homer in the seventh as neither starter figured in the decision.

Trever Miller opened the bottom of the ninth on the hill for the Cardinals and got Jay Bruce to pop out to first.

Jason Motte relieved Miller and faced Gomes, who drove a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left as the Reds avoid a three-game series sweep.
