Painter, Kramer Among Big Ten Award Winners, Hummel Has Surgery

Last updated on Tuesday, March 9, 2010

(UNDATED) - The annual Big Ten Awards in men’s basketball had a strong Purdue flavor as Boilermakers took home Coach of The Year and Defensive Player of The Year honors.

Matt Painter was named Coach of The Year while senior guard Chris Kramer is Big Ten Defensive Player of The Year for the second time in his career.

Juniors Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore were named First-Team All-Big ten by both the media and the coaches while Junior Center JaJuan Johnson made the second team.

Ohio State's Evan Turner was named conference player of the year.

Hummel spent his 21st birthday undergoing reconstructive knee surgery Monday in Indianapolis.

The Valparaiso native tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on February 24th at Minnesota, ending his season.

Hummel ranked second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.7 points and 6.9 rebounds this season.

Recovery is expected to take four to six months.

Painter says he does not expect Hummel to accompany the team when they open play in the Big Ten Tournament Friday against either Indiana or Northwestern.
