Butler Edges Syracuse To Earn Trip To Elite Eight

(SALT LAKE CITY, UT) - The Butler Bulldogs are in the “Elite Eight” of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in school history after knocking off top-seeded Syracuse 63-59 in a west regional semifinal.

Butler trailed by four points with three and-a-half minutes remaining in the game when they went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good.

Gordon Hayward led the fifth-seeded Bulldogs with 17 points with Shelvin Mack adding 14 points, all in the first half, and Willie Veasley finishing with 13 points, five during the decisive run.

Wes Johnson had 17 points to lead Syracuse with Andy Rautins scoring 15 before fouling out late and Scoop Jardine adding 14 as the Orange end their season at 30-5.

Butler improves to 31-4 as they will face Kansas State in the regional final on Saturday afternoon.

The second-seeded Wildcats survived double overtime to beat Xavier in the second west regional semifinal.
