(MIAMI GARDENS, FL) - Drew Brees threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns to lead the New Orleans Saints to a 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl 44.
The former Purdue star was named the game's MVP.
The Colts built an early 10-0 lead, but could not hold on as the Saints outscored them 25-7 in the second half.
The key play occurred at the start of the third quarter with the Colts holding a 10-6 lead.
New Orleans recovered a surprise onside kick that led to a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brees to Pierre Thomas to give the Saints their first lead of the game.
The Colts regained the lead on a four-yard touchdown run by Joseph Addai, but New Orleans would take the lead for good when Jeremy Shockey caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Brees with 5:42 left in the game.
Another former collegian from the Hoosier state struck the fatal blow as former Indiana Hoosier Tracy Porter picked off a Peyton Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for the final score of the game.
Manning threw for 333 yards with a touchdown and the pick as the Colts finish the season at 16-3.
