(ST. LOUIS, MO) - Chris Carpenter picked up his twelfth win of the season and Albert Pujols homered as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-2.
Reds starter Homer Bailey failed to retire batter, giving up singles to Skip Schumaker, Brendon Ryan and Albert Pujols to start the game.
Pujols' single was a line drive off Bailey's left ankle that bailey then picked up and threw down the right field line, allowing Schumaker and Ryan to score.
Bailey left the game for x-rays of the ankle, which were negative.
Pujols would add a solo homer in the third, his 38th home run of the season.
Carpenter allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out ten in seven innings of work to improve to 12 and 3.
With the win, the Cardinals take a four-game lead over Chicago in the NL Central.
