(SAN DIEGO, CA) - Brendon Ryan hit a grand slam and Joel Pineiro pitched into the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals won their series-opener in San Diego, defeating the Padres 5-1.
Ryan put the Redbirds up to stay when he hit his slam in the second inning off San Diego starter Tim Stauffer.
That was more than enough for Pineiro, who allowed a run on four hits over seven and two-thirds innings to improve to 12 and 9.
Pineiro's lone mistake came in the second inning when Kyle Blanks took him deep for the Padres' lone run.
It was blanks' third homer in the last four games.
