(ST. LOUIS, MO) - Four American League pitchers combined to retire 18 straight batters, and Tampa Bay’s Carl Crawford made the defensive play of the night, as the Al beat the National League 4-3 in Tuesday’s Major League All-Star game.
With the win, the American League has assured itself home field advantage for the 7th straight World Series.
The National League has not won the all-star game since 1996.
The National League, urged by a boisterous partisan St. Louis crowd, appeared to break a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 7th when Crawford leaped over the wall in left center to deny Brad Hawpe of a go ahead hone run.
Curtis Granderson hit a one out triple in the top of the 8th inning and was later sacrificed in by Adam Jones.
Mariano Rivera then secured his record 4th All-Star save to secure the American League win.
Jonathon Papelbon recorded the win, while San Diego's heath bell was scored with the loss.
