NCAA Approves Rule Changes For Next Basketball Season

Last updated on Tuesday, June 9, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The NCAA has approved three rules changes that will go into effect for the 2009-2010 men’s college basketball season.

The first change states that secondary defenders must establish position outside the area between the backboard and the front of the rim in order to draw a charge call.

That rule is designed to reduce the amount of contact under the basket.

The second change involves who can shoot free throws for an injured player.

Previously, a coach could choose anybody on the roster to take the free throws.

Now the coach must choose among the four players who are currently in the game.

Finally, the committee approved expanding replay to review flagrant fouls that could result in an ejection.

That rule will also apply to women's basketball.
