(INDIANAPOLIS) - The drivers of the Firestone Indy Lights Series will take to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval today as they practice and qualify for Friday’s Freedom 100.
The race is part of the speedway's annual "Carb Day" activities.
The IndyCar Series drivers are back on track tomorrow for the annual Carb Day practice.
The one-hour practice session is their lone opportunity to test their cars at speed before Sunday's Indianapolis 500.
KV Racing Technology announced that it will field a car for Paul Tracy for two more races this season. Tracy, a native of Canada, will drive for KV on street courses in Tracy's hometown of Toronto on July 12th and in Edmonton on July 26th.
Tracy has won twice at Toronto in 1993 and in 2003.
Tracy will start 13th for KV in Sunday's Indianapolis 500. Larry Rice, the co-rookie of the year for the 1978 Indianapolis 500, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Brownsburg.
He was 63 years old.
Rice shared rookie-of-the-year honors with future four-time Indianapolis winner Rick Mears in 1978. His eleventh-place finish in his rookie year was his best in two Indy starts.
The Linden, Indiana native came up through USAC, winning the national midget championship in 1973 and the silver crown championship in 1977 and 1981.
He was inducted in the National Midget Racing Hall of Fame in 1993.
When his driving career ended, rice became a broadcaster.
He was the color analyst for ESPN's popular "thunder" series in the 1990s and had been serving as an analyst for the international broadcasts of IndyCar series races.
