Cardinals Pitching Shuts Down Cubs, Again

Last updated on Thursday, May 21, 2009

(ST. LOUIS) - Chris Carpenter still has yet to allow an earned run this season as the St. Louis Cardinals got past the Chicago Cubs 2-1.

Carpenter was back after missing more than a month with a ribcage injury.

He allowed three hits over five innings to improve to 2-0.

Chris Duncan put the Redbirds on the board with an RBI single in the fourth with Khalil Greene adding a sacrifice fly in the seventh.

The Cubs, who were blanked by Cardinals Starter Joel Pineiro on Tuesday night, finally scored on pinch hitter Micah Hoffpauir's RBI single in the ninth.

Chicago had the tying run at third when Ryan Franklin struck-out Reed Johnson to end the game.
