NASCAR Starts Engines In Phoenix After Weeklong Break

Last updated on Thursday, April 16, 2009

(AVONDALE, AZ) - After taking a rare weekend off, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns to action this weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.

Qualifying for Saturday night's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at PIR will take place Friday afternoon. Jimmie Johnson is the defending race winner.

Former Pittsboro resident Jeff Gordon enters the weekend with the Sprint Cup points lead.

Gordon was the winner when the series last raced two weeks ago at Texas Motor Speedway, halting a winless drought that dated back to October of 2007.
