Former IU, NBA Star Isiah Thomas To Coach Florida Int'l University

Last updated on Wednesday, April 15, 2009

(MIAMI, FL) - Isiah Thomas is the new men’s basketball coach at Florida International University.

The former Indiana University star and Indiana Pacers head coach agreed to a five-year contract with the school. It is Thomas' first foray into college coaching.

After being fired by the Pacers following the 2002-03 season, Thomas was hired as the general manager of the New York Knicks and later appointed himself as head coach.

He was relieved of his duties with the Knicks last year. FIU has not had a winning record since the 1999-2000 season. Thomas replaces Sergio Rouco as head coach of the Golden Panthers.

Rouco was fired after five consecutive losing seasons.
