Briscoe Slips Past Wilson For IndyCar Win In Sunshine State

Last updated on Monday, April 6, 2009

(ST. PETERSBURG, FL) - Ryan Briscoe passed Justin Wilson shortly after a restart on lap 86 and held on to win Sunday’s IndyCar Series season-opening Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Briscoe had a late challenge from Ryan Hunter-Reay, who signed to drive with Vision Racing earlier in the week. Briscoe beat Hunter-Reay to the start-finish line by less than half a second.

Wilson came in third with Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan rounding out the top five. It was a rough day on equipment as several cars were involved in accidents.

Danica Patrick was knocked out early when her car was hit by Raphael Matos.

Pole-winner Graham Rahal was involved in a crash on the opening lap, but recovered to finish seventh.

The series takes next weekend off before racing on another temporary street course at Long Beach on April 19th.
