Last updated on Friday, April 10, 2009

(ST. LOUIS, MO) - Chris Carpenter allowed one hit over seven innings as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 to earn a split of their four-game series at Busch Stadium.

Carpenter was in line to take the loss despite taking a no-hit bid into the seventh. Yadier Molina and Brian Barden hit back-to-back RBI singles in the Redbirds' two-run seventh.

Carpenter held the Bucs hitless until Ramon Vazquez singled past the glove of Cardinals second baseman Skip Schumaker with two out in the seventh.

Pittsburgh's lone run came on a Nyjer Morgan RBI fielder's choice in the third.
