Irish To Take On Nittany Lions In NIT Semi-Final

Last updated on Monday, March 30, 2009

(NEW YORK, NY) - The Notre Dame men’s basketball team is in New York City where they will take on the Penn State Nittany Lions in an NIT semifinal game on Tuesday night.

The Irish are in the NIT semifinals for the sixth time. They have yet to win an NIT title, losing the championship game in 1973, 1984, 1992 and 2000 and finishing third in 1968. Notre Dame advanced to Madison Square Garden with a 77-67 win over Kentucky last week.

This will be the fourth time the Irish and the Nittany Lions have met in men's college basketball with Penn State winning two of the previous three games. Notre Dame's lone win over the Lions came in the 2000 semifinals of the NIT.

The first semifinal on Tuesday night pits Scott Drew's Baylor Bears and the San Diego State Aztecs.
