Last updated on Tuesday, February 24, 2009

(HOMESTEAD, FL) - The IndyCar Series is at Homestead-Miami Speedway for the season’s first open test today and Wednesday.

There will be two practice sessions today - one in the late afternoon and one at night. There will also be an afternoon and an evening practice tomorrow.

Scott Dixon returns as the defending series champion.

Nineteen different car-driver combinations are scheduled to participate as teams prepare for the season-opening race through the streets of St. Petersburg on April 5th. Among those scheduled to test today are veterans Dan Wheldon, Danica Patrick, Dario Franchitti, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal.

Franchitti makes his return to the IndyCar Series full time after spending most of last season running in NASCAR. The 2007 Indianapolis 500 champion is now with Target-Ganassi Racing. He left Andretti Green Racing to join Chip Ganassi's Nascar team after winning the 2007 IndyCar Series title.

Four rookies are also scheduled to practice today. Raphael Matos of Luzco Dragon Racing spent last season in the Indy Lights Series while Mike Conway of Dreyer and Reinbold Racing comes to the states after competing in the European GP Two Series last year. Curb-Agajanian Racing's Stanton Barrett comes to the IndyCar Series after several years of competing in NASCAR's upper divisions while Newman-Haas-Lanigan welcomes Champ Car World Series veteran Robert Doornbos to their team.
