(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Marvin Harrison’s tenure with the Indianapolis Colts could come to an end as soon as today.
Harrison's agent, Tom Condon, tells The Associated Press that the Colts have agreed to release his client after the two sides could not agree on a restructured contract.
Colts Owner Jim Irsay begs to differ, labeling Condon's remarks as "premature". Irsay tells The Indianapolis Star that he will talk to Harrison today in an effort to retain the 13-year veteran.
Harrison is coming off his two least productive seasons as a pro and is scheduled to count $13.4-million dollars against the salary cap in 2009, the most of any wide receiver in the NFL. If Harrison is released, the Colts would save approximately $6-million dollars against the cap.
Harrison has 1,102 career receptions, second only to Jerry Rice on the all-time list.
Speculation as to where Harrison might end up has centered around his hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Harrison and Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb were teammates at Syracuse.
The Colts have seven other players scheduled to become unrestricted free agents on Friday. Veteran center Jeff Saturday and punter Hunter Smith are expected to test the free agent market.
