Colts Announce Signing, Prepare For Free Agency

Last updated on Friday, February 20, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Colts officially announced that they reached a contract agreement with cornerback Kelvin Hayden on Thursday.

Hayden's new deal is reportedly worth $43-million dollars over five years with $22-million guaranteed.

Team President Bill Polian made re-signing Hayden a priority, saying that his deal would be the key to how much they could offer some of the team's remaining free agents.

Nine Colts could be unrestricted free agents when the free agent signing period begins on February 27th. Former Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday is believed to be next on the Colts' radar. There had been talk that the Colts could slap the franchise tag on the ten-year veteran, but that apparently did not happen. Thursday was the final day teams could designate franchise players.

Another question surrounds veteran wide receiver Marvin Harrison. The Colts' all-time receiving leader has three years remaining on his contract, but is coming off two sub-par seasons. Harrison will count $13-point-four million dollars toward the 2009 salary cap and the Colts could renegotiate or terminate his deal to create cap space.
