Paper: Colts Discussing Defensive Coordinator Opening

Last updated on Friday, January 23, 2009

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The Indianapolis Star reports that the Indianapolis Colts have discussed their vacant defensive coordinator job with former Tampa Bay assistant Larry Coyer.

The 65-year-old Coyer spent the past two seasons with the Buccaneers and was assistant head coach to Jon Gruden in 2008. He was not retained when Gruden was fired last week.

Coyer was a defensive assistant at the University of Iowa when new Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell was a defensive back and a graduate assistant for the Hawkeyes.

Coyer has spent most of this decade as an assistant for Mike Shanahan with the Denver Broncos, including four seasons as defensive coordinator. He does have another connection with the area as his son was a member of Indiana University's soccer teams in the late 1980s and early 1990s and currently lives in Carmel, Indiana.

Coyer and Colts officials declined comment to the newspaper when asked about Coyer's candidacy for the opening created when Ron Meeks resigned on Tuesday.
