Self Imposed Penalities Harsh Enough, Says Crean

Last updated on Tuesday, October 7, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean says the school’s self-imposed penalties have done enough damage.

Crean says he would be surprised if the NCAA hands down more serious penalties to the men's basketball program than those that are already in place.

The NCAA committee on infractions has charged former coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff with committing four major recruiting violations. The committee later tacked on a more serious "failure to monitor" charge against the school's athletic department. IU has denied that charge.

The Hoosiers have voluntarily imposed restrictions on off-campus recruiting for the head basketball coach. Crean inherited those restrictions when he replaced Sampson.

Indiana has also lost three basketball scholarships - one as a self-imposed sanction and two more in anticipation of losing them due to a subpar academic progress rate. The NCAA's ruling could come sometime next month.
