Fred Glass Introduced As New IU Athletic Director

Last updated on Wednesday, October 29, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - Indiana University President Michael McRobbie introduced Fred Glass as the school’s new athletic director on Tuesday.

Glass will replace Rick Greenspan as AD on January 2, 2009. Greenspan announced his resignation effective at the end of the year in June after the university was hit by a "failure to monitor" charge by the NCAA for the athletic department's oversight of the men's basketball program.

Indiana is still awaiting a decision from the NCAA on that charge and four other accusations on major violations committed during Kelvin Sampson's reign as head basketball coach.

Glass is a familiar figure in Indianapolis sports circles. He was president of the Marion County Capital Improvement Board from 2000 through 2007, overseeing operations for the Indiana Convention Center, Lucas Oil Stadium, Conseco Fieldhouse and Victory Field. He also presided over the committee that presented Indianapolis' bid for the 2011 Super Bowl and worked on the local organizing committees for two NCAA men's basketball Final Fours held in Indianapolis.

The 49-year-old IU graduate will receive an annual salary of $410,000 dollars on a year-to-year contract.
