Former IHSAA Commissioner Dies

Last updated on Tuesday, October 21, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Former Indiana High School Athletic Association commissioner Gene Cato died Sunday at the age of 77.

Cato headed up the IHSAA from 1983 through 1995. He was the superintendent of the Jay County School Corporation when he came to the IHSAA as an assistant commissioner in 1976.

Cato was probably best known for resisting efforts to switch Indiana's one-class basketball tournament into a multi-class tournament. The IHSAA board of directors approved a four-class basketball tournament two years after Cato retired.

Cato attended Oakland City High School, graduating in 1949 and playing basketball at Oakland City College. He served as a teacher and coach at Chandler, Booville and Zionsville high schools. He was the principal at Huntingburg High School and served as superintendent at North Harrison Schools before going to Jay County.
