(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - A proposal will be heading to the Indiana High School Athletic Association asking to consolidate state tournaments in four sports from four classes to three.

The Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association voted 33-to-5 to bring the proposal to the IHSAA.

The most notable sport that would be affected should the proposal be approved by the IHSAA is the boys and girls basketball tournaments. Controversy reigned when the IHSAA decided to move from a single-class tournament to four class tournaments in the 1997-1998 school year.

Also affected would be the state tournaments in baseball, softball and volleyball.

Proponents for reducing the number of classes from four to three cite travel concerns and the restoration of traditional rivalries in sectional play as the primary reasons for the change.

Football, which has a five-class tournament, would not be affected.
