Colts Quarterback Future Unclear

Last updated on Wednesday, August 27, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Peyton Manning was back on the practice field Tuesday as the Indianapolis Colts’ franchise quarterback returns following knee surgery five weeks ago.

Manning appeared to be moving well during practice as he tries to get ready for the regular season opener on September 7th against the Chicago Bears.

The two-time league MVP had an infected bursa sac removed from his left knee on July 14th. He is not expected to play in Thursday night's preseason finale with the Cincinnati Bengals at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Sorgi Out Against Bengals?

Peyton Manning may not be the only quarterback missing Thursday night's Colts - Bengals game. Jim Sorgi was not at practice on Tuesday.

Head Coach Tony Dungy says Sorgi has swelling in his right knee and that the medical staff is trying to keep him immobile to allow the swelling to go down. Sorgi missed Sunday night's loss to Buffalo.

Cincinnati starting quarterback Carson Palmer says he will not play against the Colts. Palmer suffered a broken nose and a cut lip while being sacked in the Bengals' loss to New Orleans last Saturday night.

Saturday Out, Backups In?

Colts Head Coach Tony Dungy says Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday's knee injury is still being evaluated. Saturday limped off the field in the third quarter of Sunday night's preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Saturday will definitely miss Thursday's game with Cincinnati and Dungy says they probably won't know the full extent of the injury until this weekend.

Veteran Ryan Lilja has played center in the past, but has missed all of training camp and the preseason with a knee injury.

Three of the Colts 2008 draft picks - Mike Pollak, Steve Justice and Jamey Richard - played center in college.
