Central Indiana Gymnasts Win Silver At Olympics

Last updated on Wednesday, August 13, 2008

(BEIJING, CHINA) - The U.S. women’s gymnastics team finished second to host China in last night’s women’s all-around competition at the Olympics.

The Chinese won by more than two points over the Americans, who beat China in last year's world championship. Defending Olympic Champion Romania finished third.

The second place finish means silver medals for two Central Indiana gymnasts. Bridget Sloan of Pittsboro was the first American to compete as she led off on the vault. Samantha Peszek of McCordsville was a spectator last night as she suffered an ankle injury before Sunday's preliminaries.

The United States led China following the vault, but fell behind for good after the uneven bars. They fell further behind when 20-year-old Alicia Sacramone fell on the balance beam and any chance of catching china was gone after Sacramone fell again during her floor exercise routine.
