(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton apologized to fans for Sunday’s tire debacle at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Pemberton addressed the issue during NASCAR's weekly teleconference, saying that there was nothing wrong with the track surface at the speedway and that NASCAR did not go to the Brickyard with the right car and tire combination.
That combination led to rapid wear of the tires, particularly the right rears, leading to nine "competition yellows" to bring the cars into the pits.
Pemberton says NASCAR and Goodyear, the sole tire supplier to NASCAR, will make sure a similar incident does not happen again next year.
Speedway CEO Tony George laid the blame for the tire troubles at the feet of NASCAR and Goodyear on Monday, saying that the speedway's surface has not changed since 2005 and there were no plans to resurface the track in the near future.
George said that the problem is solely NASCAR's and Goodyear's and that it would be up to them to figure out a solution.
