(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Jimmie Johnson held off Carl Edwards in a seven-lap trophy dash to win his second Allstate 400 at the Brickyard.
In an afternoon filled with "competition caution" periods due to problems with tire wear, Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports crew got him out of the pits ahead of Edwards during the final yellow.
Denny Hamlin was third with Elliot Sadler and Jeff Gordon rounding out the top five. Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch finished 15th and saw his lead over Dale Earnhardt Junior drop to 253. Earnhardt finished twelfth.
Sunday's race was marred by the tire problems. Teams complained of excessive tire wear during practice on Saturday and Goodyear had tires made for this weekend's race at Pocono standing by in case teams ran through the allotment of tires made for Indianapolis. They did not need to use the Pocono tires.
The tire issues led to a record eleven caution periods for 52 laps. The constant pit stops also led to a record 26 lead changes among 16 drivers.
Johnson's average speed of 115.117 miles per hour was the second-slowest in Allstate 400 history. Only Jeff Gordon's fourth win in 2004 took longer.
