IU Golfer Ties For 2nd Overall

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2008

(WEST LAFAYETTE, IN) - Indiana University junior Jorge Campillo finished tied for 2nd in the NCAA division one men’s golf championships this weekend on the campus of Purdue University.

The Spaniard finished with third and fourth round efforts of even-par 72, finishing the four-round tournament at one-over par, three shots behind medalist Kevin Chappell of UCLA.

Campillo was one of only five golfers to score even-par or lower in windy conditions in Sunday's final round and he and Chappell were the only two golfers to card three rounds at or below par in the tournament.

Campillo's tie for second at the NCAA championships matches Wayne McDonald's 1969 effort as the best individual finish in IU men's golf history.

Campillo was named first-team All-American following the tournament, becoming just the fifth Hoosier golfer to take that honor.

IU finished 21st in the team competition, their best finish since 1980. UCLA won the national championship, one shot ahead of Stanford and two shots better than USC.
