Briscoe Claims First IndyCar Series Win

Last updated on Monday, June 2, 2008

(MILWAUKEE, WI) - A week after his widely publicized crash with Danica Patrick at Indianapolis, Team Penske driver Ryan Briscoe had a near-perfect car Sunday as he notched his first IndyCar series win.

Briscoe battled with Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon and narrowly avoided a crash with just a few laps to go, taking the checkered flag in the A.J. Foyt 225 at the Milwaukee Mile.

Series points leader Dixon dominated early portions of the race, leading 146 of the 225 laps, but was passed by Briscoe on lap 177 and gave up the lead for good on lap 207 after pit stops.

Briscoe held off Dixon through lapped traffic and also avoided a crash between Marco Andretti and Ed Carpenter with four laps to go that resulted in the race finishing under a yellow flag.

Dixon finished 2nd, Tony Kanaan erased bad Indy memories of a week ago by finishing 3rd, while Dan Wheldon and Helio Castroneves were also in the top five. Danica Patrick never threatened in the race and finished 9th.

The win at Milwaukee eased building pressure on Briscoe, who had crashed out of three of the first five races this season, including last week's pit-lane crash in the Indy 500 that took both he and Patrick out of that race.

Meanwhile, Dixon continues his dominance in the IndyCar series standings. Dixon has won twice and finished in the top-three in five of the first six races, while leading nearly 52% of the laps turned this season. After sunday's second place finish, he holds a 28-point lead over Helio Castroneves.

The IndyCar series heads next to Texas Motor Speedway for Saturday night's running of the Bombardier Learjet 500. You can hear all of the action starting at 8:30am on 1340 AM WBIW.
