Illinois Point Guard Commits To IU Squad

Last updated on Tuesday, May 6, 2008

(BLOOMINGTON, IN) - The rebuilding of the Indiana University basketball team continues as Head Coach Tom Crean has received a commitment from Illinois point guard Verdell Jones.

Jones is six-foot-four, 160 pounds and averaged 17.6 points and six and a half assists for Champaign Central High School. He chose IU over Minnesota.

One item that may have steered Jones to the Hoosiers was the availability of immediate playing time after Armon Bassett was dismissed from the team.

Jones is the fifth recruit Crean has signed for either the upcoming season or the 2009-2010 campaign.

The Hoosiers lost all five of their starters off last year's squad as D.J. White and Lance Stemler graduated, Eric Gordon turned pro and Bassett and Jamarcus Ellis were dismissed from the team. Additionally, Deandre Thomas was also dismissed and Eli Holman is expected to transfer to another school.
