Dixon Claims 92nd Indianapolis 500

Last updated on Monday, May 26, 2008

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Scott Dixon led 115 laps to win a crash-filled 92nd running of the Indianapolis 500.

Dixon and Ganassi Racing teammate Dan Wheldon led 145 of the 200 laps, continuing the domination they showed during practice and qualifications. Dixon managed to dodge the wrecks that brought out eight caution periods for 69 laps.

Not all of the crashes during Sunday's Indianapolis 500 were reflected in the eight caution periods. Perhaps the most notable collision occurred on pit road when Ryan Briscoe clipped Danica Patrick's car as Briscoe was leaving his pit box. Both cars were eliminated from the race and track security had to escort Patrick from the pit lane after she walked toward Briscoe's pit. It was the first time in four starts that Patrick failed to finish on the lead lap at Indianapolis.

Dixon picks up his first Indianapolis win and becomes the 19th poll winner to go on to capture the 500. Dixon also takes over the IndyCar Series points lead from Helio Castroneves.
