(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana Pacers Forward Shawne Williams was early for his court hearing Monday after missing a hearing last Friday that put him in jeopardy of being arrested.
Williams pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge of operating a vehicle without ever having received a license. He told the judge that he had no excuse for missing Friday's hearing.
However, Marion County Deputy Prosecutor David Wyser says it is his understanding that Williams had overslept.
The judge ordered Williams to serve 40 hours community service at the Christamore House Family and Community Center on the West Side. He was also ordered to pay a fine and court costs.
Williams was arrested Sept. 11th during a traffic stop. Police say they pulled over Williams because he was driving on an expired Tennessee license plate and he changed lanes without using his turn signal.
Investigators say during the traffic stop, officers noticed marijuana in the ashtray of Williams' 2007 Cadillac Escalade. Williams denied knowledge of the drugs. He was not charged with possession of marijuana; however, two passengers were arrested on drug or weapons charges.
Williams was suspended for the first three regular-season pacers games following the arrest.
