Countdown To NFL Season Approaches

Last updated on Thursday, September 6, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - The National Football League season begins tonight in Indianapolis as the defending champion Indianapolis Colts host the New Orleans Saints.

The Colts are coming off their first world championship since 1971 as they beat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. The Saints fell one victory shy of meeting the Colts in Miami, falling to the Bears in the NFC Championship game.

The Colts have been dominant at the start of the season under Tony Dungy. Since Dungy arrived in 2002, the horseshoes' only opening day loss came at defending champion New England in 2004.

Offensive lineman Charlie Johnson and cornerback Tim Jennings will miss tonight's game with the saints. Johnson hurt a knee in last Friday's preseason finale at Cincinnati while Jennings twisted a knee in practice on Tuesday.

Offensive lineman Dylan Gandy did not participate in Wednesday's brief workout due to a groin injury and is listed as questionable. Defensive end Josh Thomas did practice despite an ankle injury and is probable for tonight's game.

The Saints will be without tight end Mark Campbell who is out with a back injury.
