Stevens Announced As New Butler Coach

Last updated on Friday, April 6, 2007

(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) - Brad Stevens was introduced as the Butler Bulldogs’ new men’s basketball coach at a news conference Thursday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The 30-year old DePauw University graduate has spent the past six seasons as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs under former coach Todd Lickliter. Lickliter resigned Monday to take over as head coach at the University of Iowa.

Stevens thanked Butler Athletic Director Barry Collier for the opportunity, saying that he was honored and humbled to coach the Bulldogs.

Butler went 29-and-7 this past season and advanced to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. The Bulldogs return five of their six leading scorers from last season.

The hiring of Stevens continues the trend of Butler elevating assistant coaches to the head job. Collier spent eleven years as head coach before leaving for Nebraska in 2000 and being replaced by his top assistant, Thad Matta. When Matta left one year later to become head coach at Xavier, Lickliter was promoted from assistant.
