(STATEHOUSE) - Legislators have voted to raise the age at which teenagers can get their driver’s license.

Teenagers can now get their license at 16 and one month if they take driver's ed, or 16-and-a-half if they don't.

Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle)'s bill boosts that to 16-and-a-half and 16-and-9-months.

The bill also bans teenagers from talking on the phone or texting while driving, and limits their ability to carry passengers. Opponents complain allowing driver's licenses at an earlier age can simplify the burdens of getting family members where they need to be.

Some rural and inner-city legislators warn driver's ed isn't readily available in their areas.

The original version of the bill would have made teenagers wait an extra six months for a license if they didn't take driver's ed. The Senate approved the bill 35-15, with the House following suit 79-17. It now goes to Governor Daniels to be signed into law or vetoed. Welch also co-sponsored a cell phone ban for adults.

That bill died earlier in the session.

Welch says she still thinks it's a good idea, but acknowledges the votes aren't there.
