Lugar: US/Russian Goal To Eliminate Nukes "Breathless In Optimism"
(WASHINGTON) - The US and Russia agreed Wednesday to try and further reduce nuclear weapons. President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, announced they are ordering further negotiations to extend and improve the “START Treaty”.
Indiana Senator and nuclear weapons expert Richard Lugar talked to MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell about the negotiations. Lugar says the announcement was remarkable and comprehensive.
Lugar says the negotiations will begin with extending the treaty, which was begun in 1991, then will work to reduce the number of nuclear weapons.
However Lugar feels that getting rid of all nuclear weapons, as was mentioned by the two world leaders, was "breathless in terms of its optimism and scope."
