Senate: Local Governments Can Keep Three Member County Commissions
(INDIANAPOLIS) - Senate backers of revamping local government have weakened a proposal to do away with three-member county commissions, allowing voters to keep the current system if they want.
A senate committee had approved a bill requiring every county except Lake and Marion to either elect a single county executive, or transfer executive power to the county council, which would appoint a county manager for day-to-day business.
The proposal now would let the commissioners reject both those options. In that case, the county manager proposal would go to the voters in a referendum in 2010.
