Stronger Regulations For Teen Drivers To Come Before Assembly
(UNDATED) - There could soon be more restrictions for teenage drivers. A legislative study committee approved draft legislation Tuesday that would create more regulations on drivers under the age of 18.
Senator Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne), who chairs the committee, says the plan would save lives. The proposal would require teens with learner's permits to log 50 hours of supervised driving experience, including 10 hours at night, before getting their licenses.
It also would prohibit drivers under the age of 18 from using cell phones or other handheld telecommunication devices while driving.
It increases the minimum driving age by six months, to 16 and a half years old for those who take drivers education classes and 17 years old for teens who don't.
The proposal is expected to be introduced during the 2009 legislative session.
