Legislators Look To Cut Property Taxes... Entirely

(STATEHOUSE) - The same issues which dominated this year’s General Assembly will occupy legislators all over again in this year’s summer study committees.
Legislators just voted to cut and cap property taxes, but for a third time, they'll study what it would take to abolish them entirely -- at least for homeowners. They'll also examine more changes to the way Indiana assesses property in the first place.
"The assessment system is broken," says House Speaker Patrick Bauer (D-South Bend). "And now to have trending and have it go on every year, we've got to see if there's a way to make this more transparent and more uniform."
The one new panel among 20 study committees will review illegal immigration, including an effort to pin down just how much it costs the state.
A bill to punish employers who knowingly hire illegals failed in this year's legislature. Bauer says that's probably the only way for the state to have an impact on what remains essentially a federal issue. He says the study committee offers a chance to explore whether it's workable.
