(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - An Indiana congressman is promoting a bill which he says would lessen the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

Fourth District Republican Steve Buyer says the legislation would increase access to the nation's domestic oil and gas reserves. Buyer and more than a dozen other Republicans are sponsoring the bill.

He realizes it will be a challenge to get it passed, given likely opposition from environmentalists.

The bill calls for "responsible" drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, increasing electricity generated from nuclear power, and using U.S. coal to produce liquid fuel.
